Media Mentors

XSE Academy runs a music mentor scheme where you will be supported by a mentor with lots of media experience.

You will need to be bright and motivated with an interest or experience in music, radio, video or journalism/marketing with an interest in running media projects and teaching other young people.

You will work towards a Gold Arts Award and NOCN in managing youth led projects or facilitation and will be offered up to 24 hours of one to one mentoring from industry mentors in partnership with Media Trust.

The Academy provides accredited training for adults trying to break into the audio/visual and broadcasting industries.

Our approach combines highly specialised training with individual mentoring supported by our industry partners.

Training for Young People

The Academy works with young people aged 11- 19, who increasingly have a really good basic knowledge of new technology or the arts but want to work with qualified tutors and re-direct their energy into a project that they can take ownership of.

Students may begin working within a classroom setting or within a mobile unit on the street, so progressing to a professional recording studio, editing suite or broadcast suite is a tangible measure of achievement.

In addition to working with our tutors, young people will work alongside our team of 25 trained peer workers (aged 16-25), who provide support, plan and co-facilitate projects.

At its best, New Media is immediate and personal and XSE Academy aims to leave young people with an outcome that they can watch, listen to and take pride in.

Training for the Community

Our radio station is only possible because of the support of volunteers from the East London Community.

We provide free training for people who live, work or study in Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Newham or The City of London.

"Since starting at XSE I have volunteered on projects that helped young musicians create their own music videos and children from the local community use the latest technology in animation, I've found it so rewarding that I forget how much it has taught me. I have worked for loads of production companies since graduating from University last year but it is my work at XSE that I am most proud of. "
