:: Kids Love Lies

It was a balmy evening in our studios when Kids Love Lies dropped in to Propaganda Radio for a proper catch up with Andy and Jamie, who featured the band in 2008, as part of cult new music vodcasts, Ear Wax.

Kids Love Lies are Ellen Murphy, Leigh Harrison, Al Baker, Matty Saywell and drummer Will Jones, who joined the band in early 2010.

We are not going to go all ‘music mag’ and draw down a modern lexicon to describe Kids Love Lies, so we will settle on Post Punk but it doesn’t stop there. The band have a punk energy, combined with some post punk sensibilities. What some critics (we think maybe male ones?) have labeled “strop – pop”, we think, is better described as giving “catchy” back its credibility. There are some major hooks to be had here but laid down alongside some appealingly self confident lyrics.

NME made the comparison to Kate Nash but we feel like Ellen could be more likely to jump in with two feet, than to paper over the cracks in anyone’s foundations and that driving energy is pulling in a raft of industry acclaim.

Kids Love Lies released their first 2 singles in 2009, receiving great support from Radio One (recording their first live session at Maida Vale studios for Huw Stephens), Xfm & 6Music.

Ellen’s clean and yet forceful vocals come through beautifully in the acoustic version of ‘How Big is Your House’. The track is accompanied by a suitably beautiful and restrained video, for a band with a sound and identity that is evolving and maturing.

The Takeover includes a live acoustic session featuring the tracks ‘ Halfway There’, ‘How Big is Your House’ and ‘Stars’ which also features on this months playlist. The track was mixed by the acclaimed producer Alex Newport ('Death Cab for Cutie', '65 Days of Static') in his New York studio, after he came across the band on Myspace and expressed his eagerness to work with them.

Kids Love Lies are currently working on new material with some live London dates leading up to their debut album release for 2011. Coming to a playlist near you very soon we hope.
